The Bath GP VTS - Psychiatry at Green Lane Hospital, DevizesWhat the SHOs say
We asked recent Bath VTS SHOs to tell us what they thought about the post. How much did you enjoy the job? Please mark it out of 10 for enjoyment.10/10; it was really, really good. What were the best things about the job?
What experience did you get?Learnt loads from the nurses; 4 days per week are ward-based; I did occasional ECT lists; one formal ward-round per week; had some old-age psychiatry experience; one clinic per week. How much teaching did you get and how good was it?Went to the 8-day Wessex Mental Health course - it was brilliant; weekly learner-centred supervision/tutorial with my consultant; informal tutorials from the Registrar; regular journal clubs; however, it was difficult to get to the weekly psychiatry teaching in Bath. How many appraisals did you have? (There should be 3 in each 6-month post.)Three. What was the on-call and rota like?Learnt loads when on-call; can be busy up until midnight. What was the on-call accommodation like?On-call accommodation available on site; escort to and from the ward provided on request. Did you manage to get to the GPVTS SHO days and see your GP Trainer during the post?No problem getting to either. What were the worst things about the job?The drive from Bath. GP Educator's comments?Helping patients with psychiatric illness is an important part of a GP's day-to-day work. Dr Nick Reid runs an excellent, popular SHO attachment at the recently-built psychiatry hospital in Devizes. Although the hospital is 20 miles from Bath, SHOs consistently value Dr Reid's support and the experience that they gain at Green Lane.
