The Bath GP VTS - Psychiatry in Bath

What the SHOs say

We asked recent Bath VTS SHOs to tell us what they thought about the post.

How much did you enjoy the job? Please mark it out of 10 for enjoyment.

8/10

What were the best things about the job?

  • The subject - I didn't expect to enjoy it but I did!
  • The people - doctors and staff
  • The teaching was superb.

What experience did you get?

Bill Bruce-Jones [SHO's consultant] is brilliant; 2 clinics per week, I always saw one new patient per clinic, there was plenty of protected teaching time to discuss the patients; lots of liaison psychiatry experience [seeing patients referred by the wards and A&E: useful experience for General Practice].

How much teaching did you get and how good was it?

Lots of super teaching in clinics; one hour one-to-one tutorial/supervision per week; I went to the MRC Psychiatry course in Bristol - it was pretty specialised but well worthwhile.

How many appraisals did you have? (There should be 3 in each 6-month post.)

Only one formal appraisal at the beginning of the post, but weekly informal review of my progress.

What was the on-call and rota like?

Can be busy, but not a problem. We give the bleep to the senior cover nurse for at least 5 hours at night.

What was the on-call accommodation like?

I was on call from home.

Did you manage to get to the GPVTS SHO days and see your GP Trainer during the post?

No problems getting time to go to these.

What were the worst things about the job?

When the consultant went on holiday soon after I started the job.

GP Educator's comments?

This is a super post. Dr Bill Bruce-Jones is an inspiring, well organised consultant who ensures that his SHOs get good and GP-relevant experience.
