The Bath GP VTS - Accident and Emergency

What the SHOs say

We asked recent Bath VTS SHOs to tell us what they thought about the post.

How much did you enjoy the job? Please mark it out of 10 for enjoyment.

9/10; I really enjoyed it.

What were the best things about the job?

  • The most organised job I've ever done.
  • The most progressive Department I've ever been in!
  • Regular teaching.

What experience did you get?

Loads of GP-relevant experience; I enjoyed the general nature of the work; well supervised.

How much teaching did you get and how good was it?

Regular, relevant teaching 2 hours per week; innovative sessions where consultant observes SHO consulting and bases teaching around it - it's the first time in my medical career that a consultant has watched me examine a patient; plenty of informal teaching.

How many appraisals did you have? (There should be 3 in each 6-month post.)

3; very helpful, carefully thought through.

What was the on-call and rota like?

Tiring, but as expected; 52 hours per week.

What was the on-call accommodation like?

Not applicable.

Did you manage to get to the GPVTS SHO days and see your GP Trainer during the post?

Got to almost all the VTS days and managed to visit 2 training practices.

What were the worst things about the job?

Nothing!

GP Educator's comments?

A&E is in super, new premises. Mr Dominic Williamson and his colleagues have developed a well organised, innovative Department that gives excellent care to patients and tremendous, relevant experience to GP trainees. The post is hard work, but highly valued by our SHOs.
