How to get selected

You’ve been called for interview for the perfect practice – how can you get the job?

  • ensure you’re CV is attractive and well written; ask your trainer to check it for you

  • many good practices will expect you to have passed or be taking the MRCGP

  • be eligible for the obstetric, CHS & minor surgery lists if possible

  • beware the invitation for an “informal visit” – it may appear informal, but the impression you make will count in their decision-making

  • word-of-mouth – this works both ways; if the practice has heard on the grape-vine that you’re pretty hot, they’ll look on you with favour

  • create a good impression if you’re locuming there – you won’t get appointed if they think you’re stroppy

  • do your homework – find out as much as you can about the practice and locality before interview

  • there’s no set format for interviews – can vary from fire-side chat to MRCGP-type questions to personality questionnaires

  • think of and market your “unique selling points”, not necessarily clinical –

    • dermatology whiz-kid?

    • computing or financial expertise?

  • flexibility on start-dates is helpful
