Locuming

 

o       a rapid way of earning cash, pays well

o       no commitment

o       good way to find out what you like/don’t like about practices

o       possible route to partnership/assistantship

o       100% “own boss”

o       self-employed tax status

o       lack of continuity gets less attractive after a while

o       no paid holidays, sick leave, mat pay

o       you’re expected to “hit the ground running” – induction unlikely to be more than 5 minutes

o       can be difficult to find out what happened to patients you looked after

o       need to put aside 40% of earnings for tax etc

o       you do all your own admin, tax, booking sessions etc

o       variable workloads & demands from practices

o       no job security, unpredictable income
