Each week on the DRC the first half hour will be spent discussing hot topics. To get the most out of these sessions, we suggest that you read:
Also be aware of current medical news stories. Most days there are medical issues that hit the headlines - everything from purported breakthroughs to scandals to ministerial pronouncements.
If your Course Organisers are talking about these topics, you can be sure that the MRCGP examiners will be asking about them as well!

Subject: DRC groupwork next week
Hi everyone
Hope you're all enjoying the Easter "break" in the sunny weather!
Groupwork for next week is more on critical appraisal - this time qualitative research, which is often seen as a bit of a closed book for us scientists. However, quite a bit of research published takes the form of qualitative research, and it's important we understand how it works and where it fits in.
A couple of years ago Michael wrote a straightforward guide to qualitative research. Please read through this before next week's session. If you think you've got the hang of all the terminology etc, try this brief quiz!
Could you also read through an example of a recent qualitative research paper - 'It's a maybe test': men's experiences of PSA testing in primary care by Evans R et al. in the April 2007 BJGP (page 303). We'll talk through this paper during groupwork, and try to decide whether or not it's any good. If, for any reason, you can't get hold of this paper, then please email me and I will try to email out a copy.
See you next week at Bath.

Subject: Preparation for Urchfont - 2nd termers
Hi everyone
I hope you're all looking forward to meeting up at Urchfont next week, and to
get you in the mood I've got a bit of homework for the 2nd termers to do
beforehand (1st termers have already been given their homework by Louise).
On the Wednesday afternoon we will be doing some critical appraisal skills work
- this time looking at systematic reviews and meta-analysis. I'd like you to
have a look at a paper and try to assess it using the
CASP tool. In the session we will go through what you think about the paper,
so if you haven't read it you won't be able to take part!
The paper is a rather large file, so best if you look it up on-line:
http://www.bmj.com/cgi/reprint/334/7588/299
It's the paper on preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes in patients with
impaired glucose tolerance, published in the 10 Feb 2007 edition of the BMJ.
Happy reading! Let me know if you have problems accessing it.
