Hot Topics for the MRCGP Spring/Summer Term 2003

Wednesday 21 May 2003
Hello everyone,

Just a quick e-mail to say that this weeks paper will be "environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality" BMJ 17th May 2003 1057-1061. http://bmj.com/cgi/content/abridged/326/7398/1057

I intend to do a speedy overview only, and then in a throw back to those far off halcyon days ( for 2nd termers anyway ) I thought a general discussion of any burning points of interest might be less soporific for all concerned.

Also, could all second termers e-mail me about whether or not they could attend a viva day on Thursday 12th June. I've spoken to Bill who feels that a day is far more do-able than trying to fit it in around DRC. Chris Bevan is attempting to arrange time off then also.

I realise people are concerned about study time, but please ask your trainers as it's not really a goer unless most people are there.

Please e-mail me with yays or nays.

Cheers,

Jon.

Crap joke for the day.

Q: How do you kill a circus ?

A: Go for the juggler.

Dear All,

Thought I'd better let you know which paper I'm covering for hot topics next week - unfortunately I don't possess the computer literacy to have a direct link from this page so it's a plain reference only.

Anyway, I thought I'd do another paper from the March issue of the BJGP - "Qualitative study of young people's and parents' beliefs about childhood asthma" by Callery et al, pp 185. Hope you find it ok.

See you on Wed.

Bill

Wednesday 19 March 2003

Hi, just a short note to let everyone know what study I am going to discuss on Wednesday.

  1. A case control study on the effect of HRT on ischaemic heart disease, BJGP Volume  53, March 2003, Number 488, page 191. I think the internet link is via the royal college. http://www.rcgp.org.uk
  2. Cosmetic breast implants and suicide page 527, BMJ march 8th, No 7388, I think this is via http://www.bmj.com
  3. There are some other articles from BMJ, cost effectiveness of beta intferon, also statins for diabetics, primary prevention. May be worth looking at I will not be reviewing these as believe it or not I do have a life.

Of course there is also this weeks BMJ?

Good tip if you don't get time to look at things properly, at the front of the BMJ there is always a short description of the papers and news, obviously I cannot support this sort of activity and feel you should read the BMJ from cover to cover.

Thanks for anyone who helped me not get into a vomitus state on wed night and I have e-mailed Tom Jones to let him know the record deal is off!

Cheers, see you Wednesday

Gus.
